Happy chinese new year!!! Today is the start of Chinese New Year! Happy new year! Chinese New Year, pronounced in Chinese as "xin nian", always falls on the date marking the beginning of Spring and thus it is also called the "Spring Festival". "xin" means "new" and "nian" means "year". The actual date for Chinese New Year is the second new moon after the winter solstice. 2008 is the year of the rat in Chinese astrology. the year of the rat is supposed to be great for getting married or starting a new job or project. Apparently we won’t see instant results, but if we are patient, fabulous things will happen. The year of the rat also lends itself to workaholic tendencies, so if you are prone to overworking yourself, make an effort to cut back & rebalance your life.
The general message seems to be: work hard & consistently, don’t get frustrated if things don’t immediately go your way, & take care of yourself. Though I guess that’s a good message all the time!
Chinese also have superstitious beliefs as regarding their xin nian..lol. which include cleaning the house before the New Year so as to welcome new and positive energy, keeping of the brooms and brushes when the cleaning is finished as well as paying off all household debts so as not to incur more debts in the New Year.
Old and worn-out money should be replaced with new and crisp bills, secured in red envelopes or "ang pao" to indicate that it is lucky money. Differences between friends and family members should be resolved. I actually slept with new crisps of the highest denomination two in my pocket yesterday night and even jan 31st..lol.. beliefs sha
The New Year's Day house decorations include red banners or couplets with New Year wishes and symbols of good fortune in gold. The new clothes worn should be in orange and red, which signify happiness and prosperity.
As there are a lot of chinese over here, its always fun to go to the parks and watch the street parade and fireworks. This years parade in my city was postponed today because of the ash wednesday celebration. I just came back from a chinese friends house, had dinner with them and we would be going to watch the parade and fireworks.. A lot of sales are going on in the mall. see decorations everywhere with pictures of rat and stuff.
